The steps to follow to clean hot water heater will primarily be dictated by the length of time that has elapsed since you last cleaned your heater. Ideally, the water heater should be cleaned at least once every year.
Steps to follow
- Turn off the power supply
- With the power source off, proceed to turn off the valve that supplies cold water to the heater and then attach a valve to drain water from the heater. This drain valve is located at the bottom of your water heater. To this drain valve, attach a hose long enough to take the drained water to the location you desire. To confirm that you have fully drained the hot water heater, open the drain valve again and observe to see that there no particles or sediment clogging it. Should you have doubts about the unclogging of the valve, turn on the cold water supply and let the water run through.
- After confirming that the hot water heater is empty, shut the drain valve and turn on the cold water supply. Since you just want to find out how clean the water that comes out of the heater is, do not fill the heater completely as this will waste too much water. Once you have a few gallons in the heater, turn off the cold water supply and again drain the water heater. Look at how clean the water that is discharged is. If it still comes out extremely black or filled with sediment, it means that your heater is still not clean and you need to repeat this step severally to fully clean hot water heater.
- Let water run through the hot water heater by turning on the cold water supply and also leaving the drain valve open. This action will let you know with confidence that there are no particles or sediment in the heater and that the water being discharged is clean enough.
- Finally, shut the drain valve, turn on the cold water supply and turn the power on.
